mobiThinking verdict: The Global Mobile Awards have a 19-year pedigree and are well-respected within the mobile business. Where other awards concentrate on particular aspects of mobile – marketing, services, apps, devices, technology or ethical initiatives – the GSMA attempts to cover it all in one set of awards. This gives the Global Mobile Awards a jack-of-all-trades feel and a lack of focus, but provides an interesting overview of everything that is happening in mobile. Some categories you can’t enter, including the best mobile app and device categories, which is a bit unusual. Also in 2013 the Mobile marketing & advertising category disappeared, which makes the GSMA awards less attractive to mobile marketers/agencies.
Most winners are given a short write up and a comment from the judges, which is useful. Disappointingly there are no video case studies (at the time of writing), so mobiThinking has collected these from the winners.

Winner: Energize the Chain for Econet Wireless Vaccine Project in Zimbabwe.
Summary: Every year vaccine-preventable diseases result in over two million deaths of children under the age of five years, many due to the disruption of the cold chain that renders temperature-sensitive vaccines ineffective. Energize the Chain’s aspiration is to eradicate vaccine-preventable deaths worldwide by preserving and extending the vaccination cold chain to ensure delivery of effective vaccines. In partnership with Econet Wireless in Zimbabwe we have already successfully used the power at mobile phone base stations as the energy source to power vaccine refrigeration units in remote locations that currently lack the energy infrastructure needed to preserve the cold chain.
Judges’ comments: “Simple, extraordinarily clever and truly innovative. Using the power available from mobile base stations to power the vital refrigeration needed to keep vaccines cool is part of the fight to save two million children around the world from vaccine preventable deaths.”

Summary: Magic Pencil is a tablet-first distance education platform. It empowers first time users and students across remote locations in emerging markets combining available wireless data connectivity with tablets and bringing global content, services and employability opportunities at a fraction of a cost. Be it the empowerment of teachers in South America and Africa or the enhancement of employability skills to students in Western India or bringing global education to emerging markets like Thailand & Indonesia or deploying school curriculum in Hindi in rural India, Magic Pencil is catering to a connected learning environment across geographies.

Summary: Dragon Drive is Nuance’s connected car platform that was recently updated to combine content and application services with Nuance’s voice, natural language understanding (NLU) and personal assistant capabilities to create a content delivery platform for automakers – and ultimately a safer, smarter connected car experience for consumers. Automakers are empowered with a customizable platform that integrates voice recognition for access to and control of all content and services.

Winner: Telenor Pakistan & Tameer Micro Finance Bank for Easypaisa.
Summary: Easypaisa is a joint venture between Telenor Pakistan, and Tameer Micro Finance Bank, one of the largest MFIs operating in Pakistan and the first bank to acquire a branchless banking license issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (the central regulatory bank) in 2008. This initiative is a joint entry between Easypaisa and Benazir Income Support (BISP) Program, a government led program as well as Care International Pakistan, an international NGO.
Judges’ comments: “An outstanding mWallet service that can be used anytime, anywhere on any mobile offering customers more innovative areas of micro finance and savings, with demonstrable evidence of genuine social impact.”

Winner: Wibbitz for Text-To-Video Technology.
Summary: Wibbitz cleverly re-packages long text content into rich and informative video summaries that can be watched conveniently on mobile screens.The process is 100% automatic and it takes just 10 seconds to convert a text article into a video. Wibbitz enables the production of short video summaries at large scales creating more than 10,000 videos on a daily basis.
The Wibbitz technology makes content much more accessible on devices where reading long text isn’t easy such as mobile, smart TV’s and wearable devices.
Judges’ comments: “A great idea, well executed. The Wibbitz technology can automatically turn long text articles into short video summaries in just a few seconds.”

Summary: City1Tap is an interactive city guide that aggregates real-time information on city services, news, shopping and entertainment with deals and loyalty programs. Its interface allows users to search for services and alerts them to interesting developments. The app’s hi-end behavioral engine uses a proprietary algorithm to anonymously analyze user’s activities and deliver targeted, personalized content. Future services will include traffic updates, car sharing, city tours and more.
Judges’ comments: “This is a great example of how the Connected City works for people.”

Winner: AT&T & Filip Technologies for FiLIP.
Summary: FiLIP is a wearable locator and voice watch for kids, that keeps parents and kids in touch at the push of a button. Unlike other devices, FiLIP combines GPS, Wi-Fi and cell tower location and cellular voice capability to provide reliable communication – indoors and out. The device is a new breed of wearable device that was designed as a simple way for kids to reach their parents, and for parents to find their children quickly and easily. AT&T is the exclusive wireless network provider for FiLIP in the U.S.
Judges’ comments: “FiLIP affords parents peace of mind with the ability to quickly call and locate their children. This is a really well designed product fulfilling a clear market need and making a complex solution very simple for the user.”

Judges’ comments: “This was a great submission with a strong business case that demonstrates tangible and non-tangible benefits to enterprises – including strong financial results. The cross platform solution is adaptable to an ever-changing environment, which is critical in enterprise mobile deployments”

Summary: AT&T Digital Life is an all-digital home security and automation service that offers on-the-go access to your home from virtually anywhere using your smartphone, tablet or PC. Monitor and manage your home using a downloadable app or access the Digital Life website on your mobile device. Adjust the thermostat, lock/unlock a door or shut off the water main if you’re alerted there’s a leak—and do it all remotely.
Judges’ comments: “This is a clever and comprehensive all-digital home security and automation service that offers on-the-go access to your home from virtually anywhere using your smartphone or tablet. With a simple interface that has driven adoption, the App can be used to remotely adjust the thermostat, lock/unlock a door or shut off the water main from half-a-world away.”

Winner: Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Lowe and Partners for Kan Khajura Tesan.
Summary: Kan Khajura Tesan is the first fully advertiser funded mobile based entertainment-on-demand initiative in India. The driving force behind this campaign is the fact that a large percentage of the target group for HUL FMCG brands are in media darkness and cannot be reached via traditional media like TV, radio & print. In these rural, semi-rural areas, electricity is limited to only 20 percent of the population, limiting access to TV and radio.
The solution for this was to use a device whose reach was spread far wider than traditional mass media combined- mobile phones.
Judges’ comments: “Kan Khajura Tesan is an innovative and positive way around a media challenge using mobile, this pull push service presses all the right buttons.

Summary: GoSakto allows customers to create their own promo bundles by making a simple series of choices – which service component/s (voice, SMS, data) they want in their bundle, how much of voice, SMS and data they need, and for how long they want it valid – via an easy-to-use menu on USSD. GoSakto added to the value of USSD by improving its revenue-generating potential, providing the user interface through which customers can create thousands of promo bundles via a step-by-step creation process, guiding them through a decision tree, resulting to one of the many possible resulting promo bundle combinations.
Judges’ comments: “What really impressed the judges about this submission was that it delivers the innovative pricing features to the prepaid market that have previously been confined to the postpaid market – giving many more customers the ability to personalize their services and tailor them to their needs.”

Winner: Vodafone Foundation in India, the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) and the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women for RUDI Sandesha Vyavhar (RSV) project.
Summary: RUDI Sandesha Vyavhaar (RSV) is an ERP tool that works on simple mobile feature phones. It allows the Rural Distribution (RUDI) network (an agricultural cooperative operated by a group of rural women in Gujarat) to place orders, track inventory and manage their businesses efficiently, using their mobile phones. The tool was developed jointly by the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, and Vodafone Foundation in India. Since being introduced in January 2013, RSV has eliminated inefficiencies in the RUDI channel, increasing sales by as much as 300 percent for the women and boosting their incomes and livelihoods.
Judges’ comments: “Helping the users to help themselves is often the best method of uplifting rural communities. Using this mobile service has reduced operational inefficiencies in their supply chain and increased efficiencies in the supply chain by 300-400 percent revolutionizing the life of working women using this service.”

Winner: Smart Communications for Smart’s SafePh: Yolanda Response.
Summary: SafePh is a year-round emergency preparedness and disaster response campaign that aims to raise public awareness and strengthen internal capabilities. The Philippines was already hit by 25 typhoons as of early December. Just a month before Super Typhoon Yolanda, the Philippines was hit by several disasters – two strong typhoons in Luzon (Typhoon Santi and Typhoon Vinta) and a strong earthquake in Bohol Islands. For Super Typhoon Yolanda, mobile services play a crucial role in providing communications as relief and in longer term rehabilitation for the whole Central Philippines.
Judges’ comments: “A response commended on many levels: preparedness, partnerships, and the rolling out of a whole portfolio of services aimed at improving communications access for the affected community in a rapid response fashion.”

Winner: Turkcell for Turkcell My Dream Partner.
Summary: Population of Turkey is 80 million and 800.000 are visually impaired. Only 5 percent of blind population is educated because it is really difficult for blind people to reach needed information quickly and independently. Turkcell My Dream Partner is an IVR and mobile application service that enables blind people to access information in a fast and independent manner, free of charge. Through the use of speech to text technology it brings services, news, educational materials and navigation systems to blind people as well as enabling them to take notes on these subjects more easily.
Judges’ comments: “This gives visually impaired people independence, and commendably, My Dream Partner is free of charge!”

Summary: The Climate Change Program strives to reduce CO2 emissions, fossil fuel consumption and the environment & climate impact of GP’s operations. The program focuses on six areas- reduce carbon emission, create employee awareness, adopt green practices, create green momentum in society and provide green services for its customers.
Judges’ comments: “This program has set clear targets for the adoption of renewable power sources, including water conservation, and displays commitment to long term pursuit of the project aims.”

Summary: DEVICE 6 plays with the conventions of games and literature, entwines story with geography and blends puzzle and novella, to draw players into an intriguing mystery of technology and neuroscience.
Judges’ comments: “Innovative game design with fantastic synthesis that recognizes the physicality of a mobile device.”

Winner: CityMapper for CityMapper.
Summary: Citymapper is reinventing the everyday urban transport app and making the large complicated city simple and usable. A to B journey planning, real-time departure info on all modes of transport where available, weather, alerts, disruptions and everything you need and may not even realize that you need to manage your life in the city.
Judges’ comments: “The travel app with every possible route, timings and cost. We’d be lost without it.”

Summary: CamMe is a gesture-based camera app that changes the way people take pictures, allowing you to take pictures from distance without touching the device. Just raise your hand, close it to activate the camera, CamMe will count 3, 2, 1 and you can pose and smile, a great new selfie will be taken. CamMe is powered by PointGrab, a leader in gesture recognition software solutions offering a natural way of interacting with devices. Over 20 million CE devices are already enabled with hand gesture control powered by PointGrab on world’s top brands including Samsung, TCL, Skyworth, Lenovo, Acer, Fujitsu.

Winner: Akbank for Akbank Direkt Mobile App.
Summary: “Akbank Direkt Mobile” is formed of iOS, Android and Windows 8 apps which were all developed in-house by Akbank Direkt IT Mobile Team. The apps are built upon a user-oriented design supported with a great level of resource efficiency. Each app is developed according to the platform based design guidelines which allow them to response faster. Network payload is balanced by best use of JSON and GZIP data compression methods which also provides minimum response time of transactions. “Login with Single Password” feature enables users to log in with only one step, a unique banking experience in other words.
Judges’ comments: “This is a really well thought through piece of app design which is both device and network friendly and thus greatly enhances the user’s experience.

Summary: Nokia Solutions and Networks’ iSON automation for operations helps to rapidly resolve network outages and assure operator revenues. By reducing time-consuming manual interventions, operations personnel are freed to engage in more proactive maintenance tasks. This helps to improve network availability and service quality, which in turn increases subscriber satisfaction. Telefonica o2 UK realized the following: a) Automated over 10,000 repetitive manual actions a month; b) 70 percent alarm reduction; c) 40 percent reduction in site visits d) Up to 10 percent savings in energy (estimate); e) Up to 2 million Euro OPEX savings a year.

Summary: SecureAuth IdP cost-effectively combines single-sign-on, native multi-factor authentication and device fingerprinting in one platform for cloud and web applications. This groundbreaking unified approach to identity workflow is a radical departure from deploying separate products– an approach that simply doesn’t work for the cloud. SecureAuth enables a simple process for establishing the same level of security and control set up for on-premise applications to cloud and mobile applications—and uses already-established Active Directory or other directory roles and permissions. SecureAuth makes multi-product deployments obsolete while minimizing risk, increasing productivity, and reducing management costs.

Summary: Demograft converts mostly unexploited subscribers’ passive location data into a valuable asset. What operators will get is actionable analytics for their most typical business priorities: a) investing into mobile broadband profitably in the context of inflated customer expectations and stiff competition; b) targeting promotions precisely to maximize advertising return, especially of mobile broadband. With Demograft mobile operators add up to 3 EUR per subscriber to the operator’s ARPU and EBITDA – the equivalent of 11 percent of its annual network investments and marketing budget.
Judges’ comments: “Compelling argument and good use cases. Notable example of big data used to provide quick, targeted, actionable insight for operators in smaller markets.”

Winner: SK Telecom for Commercial LTE-Advanced Network and KT Corporation for Wideband LTE-A Commercial Service.
Summary: SK Telecom launched the nation’s first LTE in July 2011 and the first LTE-Advanced network through smartphones in June 2013. Currently, it offers 150Mbps Wideband LTE using 20MHz bandwidth(1.8GHz band), while providing 150Mbps LTE-Advanced through “10MHz(800MHz)+10MHz(1.8GHz)” Carrier Aggregation(CA). As of 2013-end, SK Telecom’s LTE and LTE-Advanced subscribers take up over 50 percent of its total mobile subscriber base. Moreover, it was the world’s first to demonstrate 225Mbps LTE-Advanced CA in November 2013, then 300Mbps LTE-Advanced via tri-band in January 2014, and then at MWC 2014, it demonstrated 450Mbps LTE-Advanced tri-band CA.
KT’s Wideband LTE-A is a total commercial LTE solution that consists of systems and services based on wideband technology. Those are wideband LTE with 20MHz bandwidth (commercialized in Sep 2013), LTE-A with Carrier aggregation (commercialized in Aug 2013), Wideband LTE Home femto cells (commercialized in Nov 2013), LTE Public femto cells (commercialized in Dec 2012), and eMBMS services (pilot for commercialization in Nov 2013).
Judges’ comments: “The judges recognized that these two operators have set the global standard for LTE-A services and user adoption and shown the rest of the world what amazing results can be achieved in the market place, placing Korea firmly at the head of world mobile high speed mobile data innovation.”
